Glenella is about 6 km from the CBD on the Bruce Highway and splits neatly in two. The eastern and south-eastern parts are residential with a small industrial estate; the rest is rural land under sugarcane and some grazing. Scattered housing appeared in the 1970s as neighbouring Mount Pleasant urbanised, the population passed 1,000 by 1980 and doubled through that decade. The primary school has been open since 1912, and 4,545 people lived here at the 2021 census.
